His manager, Manny Gallegos, confirmed that Wood died of natural causes at his home in Moreno Valley, California, surrounded by family.
In his final message to fans, Wood said, "Catch you on the rebound," a nod to his 1967 hit song.
Early Life
Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wood moved with his family to San Pedro, California. He later attended Compton College, where he developed his passion for music, inspired by soul legends like Sam Cooke and Jesse Belvin. He chose the name Brenton Wood as a tribute to his home county and began pursuing a career in music.
Career Highlights
His career took off in 1967 after signing with Double Shot Records. His songs The Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign became soul classics, reaching No. 19 on the R&B charts and No. 9 on the pop charts.
In 1972, Wood started his own label, Prophesy Records, and later released music through Mr. Wood Records.
Final Years
Earlier this year, he began his farewell tour, Catch You on the Rebound: The Last Tour, but had to stop due to health problems that led to his hospitalization.
Wood’s music remains popular today, with The Oogum Boogum Song featured in shows and movies like The Umbrella Academy, Almost Famous, and Don’t Worry Darling. His song Great Big Bundle of Love also gained new attention after being featured in Big Little Lies.
