Three Phases of
Memorial Events
Phase One: Plains and
Atlanta, Georgia
The first phase will start on January 4 in Plains, the small
Georgia town where Carter was born and raised. A motorcade will pass through
the streets of Plains, stopping at his childhood home. From there, it will
travel to Atlanta, with a stop at the Georgia State Capitol to honor his
contributions to the state.
Later that day, a public memorial service will be held at
the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, allowing people to pay tribute to
Carter’s legacy.
On January 5 and 6, his remains will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta, giving visitors a chance to reflect on his life and achievements.
The second phase begins on January 7, when Carter’s remains
are flown to Washington, D.C. A ceremony will be held at the U.S. Navy Memorial
to honor his service as a Navy lieutenant. His remains will then be taken by a
horse-drawn procession to the U.S. Capitol.
From January 7 to January 8, Carter will lie in state at the
Capitol Rotunda, an honor given to the country’s most respected leaders. During
this time, the public will be invited to pay their respects.
Phase Three: State
Funeral and Burial
The final phase will be a state funeral at the Washington
National Cathedral on January 9. This service will be attended by former
presidents, political leaders, and dignitaries from around the world. It will
