An air traffic controller died making sure the Batik Airways
plane flew to safety
On September 28, 2018, a powerful earthquake and tsunami
struck Palu, Indonesia, causing devastation and claiming over 4,340 lives. Amid
the chaos, 21-year-old air traffic controller Anthonius Gunawan Agung made a
heroic decision that saved many lives. His final words, "Batik 6321 clear
for take-off," ensured the safe departure of Batik Airways Flight 6321,
carrying 148 passengers and crew. Tragically, his selfless actions cost him his
life.
When the 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck, the control tower
at Palu Airport began to shake violently. While his colleagues evacuated,
Anthonius chose to stay behind to guide the plane to safety.
The flight, piloted by Captain Ricosetta Mafella, managed to
take off three minutes ahead of schedule. As the plane climbed, Mafella noticed
a massive wave forming along the coastline, unaware of the disaster unfolding
below. He later described Anthonius as a "guardian angel" for his
bravery.
As the tower sustained severe damage, Anthonius’s escape
route was blocked. With no other options, he jumped from the fourth floor.
Although he survived the fall, he suffered a broken leg and critical internal
injuries. Rescuers rushed him to a local hospital, but it lacked the resources
to treat his wounds. While waiting for a helicopter to transfer him to a
better-equipped facility, he tragically passed away.
Anthonius’s courage was widely recognised, and he was
honoured as a national hero. Captain Mafella shared how Anthonius had refused
to leave the tower, saying, "Wait, Batik is still here." His
dedication ensured the safety of the passengers and crew, even as the disaster
unfolded.
The Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami left immense destruction
in its wake, but Anthonius’s story stands out as a reminder of human bravery
and selflessness. His actions will always be remembered as a symbol of hope and
heroism during one of Indonesia’s darkest moments.
